Learn how to tune your ukulele really quickly without the need for complicated sheet music and hit all the right notes with this cool tool for your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.

Design 7/10

The design is simple with the realistic ukulele photo as the main graphic set against a white background and the GCEA keys at the bottom of the screen. There’s nothing more to the design though, so I give it a 7/10.

Functionality 7/10

The app is as simple as they come for tuning your ukulele, especially if you do it by ear. The four GCEA keys at the bottom your screen are your simple guide to tuning. Just make sure your device isn’t in silent mode and start playing your strings. The app does not auto-detect the note being played, so you have to bring your four strings into GCEA without any hints from the app. Doing it by ear is simple if you are an expert, but doing it when you are a learner and have just gotten a new ukulele is a difficult thing to do. The app is an excellent thing if simplicity is what you are looking for.

However, it doesn’t show you how far out of tune you are. It also sticks to standard GCEA chords only as opposed to all major/minor chord combinations such as (Major, 6,7) and Minor (Minor, m6, m7).

For me, the app is only good for complete beginners, and I give it a 7/10. The latest version offers alternative tunings and an updated UI for iPhone X.

The app is download-free, and there are no in-app purchases. Unfortunately, it is only available for iOS devices and is only compatible with iOS 9.0 or later.

Ease of Use 7/10

The app is as simple as it gets and gets a 7/10, only for simplicity. However, it lacks key elements that would make the tuning experience better and more sophisticated, for instance, showing the users how far out of tune they are, and including a broader range of notes.

The app should also hold keys longer because this is an app for those who tune by ear. An alternative would be to incorporate a ‘repeat’ option into the app.

Final Opinion

This isn’t the leading ukulele tuning app in my book personally, and I’d only recommend it for complete newbies who just need to understand how to tune their instruments to the basic GCEA chords. However, it misses too many elements that make a good tuner. The UI and the operation are simple enough. The app is quite small so that it won’t take up any unnecessary space on your iOS device.

It’s a nice app but too rudimentary in my book.

Pros:

  • Simple UI
  • Comfortable and responsive controls
  • Easy for beginners

Cons:

  • No auto detect for your ukulele
  • Misses vital functions such as extended notes and keys
  • You can’t look up chords or change the pitch
  • The app is only available on iOS
